Indonesia's inflation rate swelled 0.14 percent in November 2019, triggered by commodity price hikes following a surge in demand ahead of Christmas 2019 and New Year's Eve 2020 celebrations, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) remarked.
"The movement of the consumer price index (in November) remained same as that of the previous month. It rose in November and is expected to increase higher in December 2019 along with preparations for Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations," BPS Chief Suhariyanto stated in Jakarta on Monday.
The inflation in November 2019 brought the year-on-year inflation to three percent and year-to-date inflation to 2.37 percent. The November 2019 inflation increased 0.12 percent than 0.02 percent in the previous month.
Not all areas in the country witnessed inflation in November 2019. The BPS noted that 57 out of the country’s cities surveyed for consumer price index recorded an inflation, while 25 cities registered a deflation last month.
"With the figure, the yearly inflation is three percent; lower than November 2018 and November 2017 recorded at 3.3 percent," he pointed out.
With the yearly inflation at three percent in November 2019, the BPS chief is optimistic of Indonesia recording the maximum inflation target of 3.5 percent for this year.
Suharyanto noted that almost all spending groups barring transportation, communication, and financial services recorded inflation in November 2019.
The group of foodstuffs recorded the highest inflation of 0.37 percent, contributing 0.07 percent to the November 2019 inflation. The foodstuffs comprised red chillies, rising 0.08 percent; fresh fish and bird's eye chillies, swelling 0.02 percent respectively; and green chillies soaring 0.01 percent.
