The 8th CAEXPO and CABIS Concluded with Success

October in autumn produces rich fruits. On the afternoon of Oct 26, the closing ceremony and press conference of the 8th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and the 8th China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (CABIS) was held, where outcomes of the two events are released and the closing for the two events are announced. 200 participants attended the closing ceremony and press conference, including Li Jinzao, Executive Vice Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, representatives from co-sponsors of ASEAN countries, representative of ASEAN Secretariat, leaders of the Two Events Command Center of Guangxi and journalists.


Compared with the previous sessions, the closing ceremony of the 8th CAEXPO is exceptionally ceremonious to highlight the co-sponsorship of China and ASEAN. At the closing ceremony, Pen Chan, representative of ASEAN Secretariat, and Li Jinzao, Executive Vice Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region presented awards of 8 categories to organizers of exhibitors and trade visitors from ASEAN and China respectively, such as ASEAN Secretariat, Hainan, Fujian and Qingdao of China.


The allocation of the pavilion of Cities of Charm of the 9th CAEXPO was announced; Hainan, the City of Charm of China of the 8th CAEXPO handed over the seal of "City of Charm" to Guangzhou, the City of Charm of China of the 9th CAEXPO; Malaysia, the Country of Honor of the 8th CAEXPO handed over the seal of "Country of Honor" to Myanmar, the Country of Honor of the 9th CAEXPO.


At the press conference after the closing ceremony, Zheng Junjian, Secretary General of CAEXPO Secretariat made a brief review on the achievements made at the 8th CAEXPO and CABIS and the consideration for the 9th CAEXPO and CABIS.


Zheng Junjian said that coinciding with the 20th anniversary of establishment of China-ASEAN Dialogue Relations, China-ASEAN Friendship and Exchange Year, and the 1st anniversary of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) in force, the 8th CAEXPO and CABIS are of great significance. As an integral part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of China-ASEAN Dialogue Relations, the 8th CAEXPO and CABIS highlight the theme of "20 years' cooperation and development, fruitful CAFTA, ever-growing CAEXPO", achieving the remarkable result as expected.


The 8th CAEXPO and CABIS are the exceptionally spectacular occasions, becoming a milestone in the history of friendship and history of China and ASEAN. With leaders of government present and various multilevel programs arranged, the two events are high profile, rich and practical. Participants of the 8th CAEXPO and CABIS include Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Vice President of Myanmar Tin Aung Myint Oo, Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Naranong, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Secretary General of ASEAN Secretariat Surin Pitsuwan and ministers or officials of ASEAN countries. There are totally 240 VIPs at ministerial level who attend the 8th CAEXPO and CABIS, with 141 from China and 99 from ASEAN and other countries. Representatives of international organizations, leaders of chambers of commerce or trade associations of China and ASEAN, celebrities of business community and other walks of life, experts and scholars also attend the two events.


The 8th CAEXPO sees more high level contacts between political and business communities and multilevel exchanges than the previous session, such as interviews between leaders of ASEAN countries and leaders of local governments of China, talks between entrepreneurs, interviews and exchanges between ministers and leaders of local governments of China with business people from home and abroad.


The economic outcome of the 8th CAEXPO is enhanced, highlighting the fruits of CAFTA. The number of exhibiting companies reaches 2,300, growing 4.6%,  and the number of trade visitors is 50,600, growing 3.26% than the previous session. As of 4 pm of Oct 26, the accumulated trade volume of the 8th CAEXPO reaches US$ 1.807 billion, growing 5.6% than the previous session. 105 international economic cooperation projects are signed, with a total contract price of US$ 7.42 billion, growing 10.86% year on year, of which 52 projects are the "Going Global" projects between foreign companies and provinces or cities or the centrally State-owned enterprises of China, with a total contract price of US$ 2.65 billion, growing 37.8% year on year. 102 domestic economic cooperation projects are signed, with a total contract value of 73.11 billion yuan, growing 8.39% than the previous session. Guangxi, the host region of the 8th CAEXPO, signs 69 international cooperation projects with a total value of US$ 4.69 billion, accounting for 63.2% of the total value of the international projects signed.


14 meetings and exchange activities are organized at the 8th CAEXPO, especially more meetings and exchanges in people-to-people contacts, social and cultural fields arranged, to promote a comprehensive, multi-level and wide-ranging cooperation. Wherein,the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection hosts China—ASEAN environment protection and cooperation forum with the theme of "environmental protection cooperation"; other relevant ministries hold relative conferences and exchange activities in the fields of quality inspection, finance, solar energy, drug safety, think-tank, population and family development, cultural industry forum, publication, forest, logistics and so on. The forums produce a number of practical results, for example, the environment forum launches the plan of the China –ASEAN Green Messenger program, establishing the cooperation network on environmental conservation industry of China-ASEAN. The forum on quality inspection adopts a statement on strengthening cooperation of China-ASEAN in product quality and safety-----"Nanning Joint Statement". The publication forum reaches Nanning Consensus, and the financial forum centering on financial and fiscal cooperation produces new fruits on regional transaction settlement, financial supports to Chinese enterprises to "Going Global", and mechanisms of financial cooperation, etc.


The influence of CAEXPO has been further enhanced. The 8th CAEXPO and CABIS have, as always, drawn eyeballs of Chinese and foreign mainstream and professional media, attracting a large number of journalists/correspondents. Statistics show that 1738 journalists/correspondents (up by 19.2% over the previous year) from 275 media (up by 38.19% over the previous year) around the world cover the event. Among them, 95 are from 69 ASEAN media, increased by 20 percent over that of 2010, which makes the 8th CAEXPO and CABIS the events in China drawing the highest attendance of press from ASEAN countries.


The closing ceremony was chaired by Pen Chan, representative of ASEAN Secretariat. And the press conference was chaired by Jia Guoyong, Deputy Director of Trade Development Council of Ministry of Commerce of China.
