               9th CAEXPO opens with grandeur
Xi Jinping attends and declares 9th CAEXPO open

In the golden autumn, Nanning, the Green City of China, with festivity around the town, throws open her arms to guests from home and abroad. On September 21, the 9th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) opened ceremoniously in the Chinese Hibiscus Hall of Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center. Standing Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, President U Thein Sein of Myanmar, the Country of Honor of the 9th CAEXPO, Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Mohamad Yassin,Thai Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong and Cambodian Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh were present at the opening ceremony.

The 9th CAEXPO, held in the year of 2012 which marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Cooperation between China and ASEAN and the China-ASEAN Year of Science and Technology Cooperation, bears special and profound significance.

At 9 am, the opening ceremony of the 9th CAEXPO officially kicked off. The Chinese Hibiscus Hall, where the ceremony was held, was decorated with numerous flowers and made resplendent and magnificent, brimming with friendship and harmony, symbolizing the bright prospect for the friendly cooperation between China and ASEAN.

The opening ceremony was chaired by U Win Myint, Minister of Commerce of Myanmar, the Country of Honor of the 9th CAEXPO. Ma Biao, Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the host of CAEXPO, Gao Hucheng, International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce of China, and President U Thein Sein of Myanmar, delivered their speeches respectively.

Ma Biao said that with the joint efforts of China and the 10 ASEAN member countries, the CAEXPO has produced fruitful outcomes one year after another, playing the role of platform in promoting friendly exchanges, economy and trade and the cooperation of multiple fields. A better and better CAEXPO has widened the path for win-win. Guangxi, as the organizer of the CAEXPO, is ready to write a new chapter in the history of China-ASEAN friendship and cooperation by strengthening cooperation with parties concerned to jointly build the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, to jointly advance the cooperation of Pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Zone and the Greater Mekong Sub-region, the construction of Nanning-Singapore Economic Corridor, he added.

Gao Hucheng said that the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Cooperation between China and ASEAN signed 10 years ago marked the official launching of the building of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), and that over the past 10 years, we have jointly built the platform of the CAEXPO, fully followed through on the Framework Agreement, achieved the full operation of CAFTA as scheduled and advanced the common development in the region. He also said that the 9th CAEXPO will be a grand event of cooperation for win-win and common development, which will comprehensively showcase the new achievements and new opportunities offered by CAFTA and bring more benefits to the enterprises and peoples of both sides.

U Thein Sein said that It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to speak as the Country of Honor and on behalf of my ASEAN colleagues at the 9th China-ASEAN Expo which plays a crucial role in promoting friendship and trade between ASEAN and China.

I also wish, on behalf of the all participants of ASEAN Member States to thank His Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping, the Vice President of the Government of the People's Republic of China and authorities of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the organizers for the warm hospitality and excellent arrangement accorded to us in this event.

Being the Country of Honor, I am happy to say that the national pavilion of Myanmar is displayed three times larger than those of the previous year. Information on economic development in promising sectors in Myanmar is exhibited in three-part pavilion.

Today, ASEAN-China relation has started to enter into third decade. We highly appreciate the initiatives made by China to strengthen relations with ASEAN. When ASEAN and China established relations in 1991, we focused mainly on economic cooperation and trade. Throughout the decades the relationship has been strengthened and it has brought mutual benefits.

ASEAN Member States attach great importance to the CAEXPO which encompasses friendly exchanges between ASEAN and China, trade and economic promotion and multi-sectoral cooperation. The CAEXPO has now become one of the main vehicles for the full realization of ASEAN-China Free Trade Area.

It is very timely and appropriate that this year's China-ASEAN Expo has selected its theme as “Science and Technology Cooperation”. Myanmar has designated Yatarnarpon Cyber City as “a City of Charm” and wish to invite Foreign Direct Investment from China and ASEAN to the city to invest in the field of science and technology.

The high quality agriculture products and technologies at the CAEXPO will surely benefit to all agro-based countries.

As our economies are connected to each other, we are happy to see a healthy economy growing in China. ASEAN welcomes the robust economic partnership with China. We wish to see peoples of ASEAN and China reaping the fruits of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area.

China has become ASEAN's largest partner in 2009. The volume of trade between us has an increase of 20.9 per cent in 2011 from 2010.

ASEAN is China's third largest trading partner and balance of trade amounting US$11.0 billion in favor of ASEAN was realized for the first time in 2011.

The foreign direct investment from China to ASEAN has also increased significantly over 100 per cent in 2011 compared to 2010. This is a very good trend and we should keep this momentum.

We highly appreciate China's support for ASEAN's centrality in the evolving regional architecture, and for ASEAN integration process in building the ASEAN Community by 2015.

The market of ASEAN and China is indeed a huge one. We both have our own distinguished characteristics and are endowed with natural and human resources. Above all, we are situated in a rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region. The present Asia-Pacific region has become the centre of gravity in the international relations and trade. Hence, it is important for all of us to work together to promote peace and development of our region.

In conclusion, we wish to convey our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for the continued success of China-ASEAN Expo, and long lasting ASEAN-China cooperation.

Next, the short film played vividly demonstrated the remarkable achievements scored in the friendly exchanges, promotion of trade and economy, and cooperation in multiple sectors and highlighted the theme of cooperation for win-win. After the film, a huge sign with words  “10+1>11” on it came on the stage, displaying the strong force of cooperation.

At 9:35, Xi Jinping declared open the 9th CAEXPO.

After that, H.E. Xi Jinping, Vice President of People's Republic of China, H.E. U. Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, H.E. Thongsing THAMMAVONG, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, H.E. Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Honorable Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, H.E. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E. CHAM Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce of the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Pehin Dato Yahya, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Gusmardi Bustami, Director General for National Export Development of the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Cristino L. Panlilio, Undersecretary of Trade and Industry of the Republic of the Philippines, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of National Development of the Republic of Singapore, H.E. Lim Hong Hin, Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN, H.E. Gao Hucheng, China's International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce, and H.E. Guo Shengkun, Secretary of the Communist Party of China Guangxi Committee, came to the stage to cut ribbons for the 9th CAEXPO.

On the table for ribbon-cutting, the long scroll drew the attention of all the audiences. The 14 VIPs untied the red silk which bound the scroll and exposed a piece of “grand picture” illustrating the achievements and prospect of China-ASEAN cooperation. Extending the closed great picture or plan, which is the literal meaning of the practice, expressed the consensus of win-win and common development achieved only through cooperation and displayed the confidence of China and the 10 ASEAN countries to jointly create a brighter future through the platform formed by the CAEXPO.

Amid confetti and colorful ribbons rained down and thunderous applaud, the 9th CAEXPO opened with grandeur and pomp.

A total of some 1,000 people attended the opening ceremony, including top officials of ministries of China, leaders of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, international renowned business leaders, heads of chambers of commerce, researchers of regional economy and representatives of exhibitors and traders.

Held against the backdrop of the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Cooperation between China and ASEAN and the China-ASEAN Year of Science and Technology Cooperation, the 9th CAEXPO will highlight the theme of cooperation for development and mutual benefits, play the role of the platform for friendly exchanges, promotion of economy and trade and cooperation in multiple fields and further promote the good-neighborly relationship and strategic partnership between China and ASEAN by conducting comprehensive cooperation.
