With the open of the 13th CAEXPO, Sri Lan-ka, as the Special Guest Country, will showcase its unique charm and opportunities to the visitors.
As the Special Guest Country, Sri Lanka will showcase its images and business opportunities at the 13th CAEXPO, a platform co-built by China and ASAEN, to seek opportunities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation in building the new Maritime Silk Road. It is ready to have a sincere “handshake”with 1.9 billion consumers in the Chinese and ASEAN markets.
It is the first time for the CAEXPO to have invited a country along the 21St Century Maritime Silk Road to be the Special Guest Country. This not only helps the CAEXPO to further open up itself and to expand its influence beyond the China-ASEAN region, and create more opportunities for China and ASEAN businesses in and outside the region, but also enables other countries along the new Maritime Silk Road to share the benefits of the initiative and effectively push forward its construction.
Sri Lankan economist Lakshman Siriwardena pointed out that under the initiative of jointly building the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road proposed by China, infrastructure construction as well as policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and people-to-people exchanges will bring substantial benefits for Sri Lanka to achieve its goal of becoming “the Economic Center in South Asia”. Sri Lanka’s government attaches great importance to this initiative, as evidenced in the major cooperation projects between China and Sri Lanka that were re-launched recently, in the third round negotiations on the China-Sri Lanka FTA completed in August 2016, and in the programs to be arranged during the 13th CAEXPO, in which Sri Lanka will participate as the Special Guest Country.
Starting from the 11th CAEXPO in 2014, the Special Guest Country mechanism was launched, to be more specific, one of RCEP countries (exclusive of China and the 10 ASEAN countries) or one of the countries along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road will be invited as the Special Guest Country of the CAEXPO. The Special Guest Countries of the 11th and 12th CAEXPO were Australia and South Korea respectively. And Sri Lanka is the Special Guest Country of the CAEXPO 2016. Sri Lanka Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen will lead a high-ranking delegation to attend the 13th CAEXPO and address the opening ceremony. Besides, a series of special guest country-related activities, for instance, Sri Lanka pavilion, national promotion conferences and commodity display will be arranged during the fair period.
