On June 10, Chinese president Xi Jinping hosted Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Qingdao Summit and made a speech. Xi put forward five suggestions on the future development of SCO, one of which was that “we need to build a powerful engine to achieve common development and prosperity. We should increase complementarity of our respective development strategies, continue to advance the Belt and Road cooperation under the principle of delivering shared benefits through extensive consultation and joint contribution, accelerate regional trade facilitation, and step up the implementation of the Agreement on International Road Transport Facilitation and other cooperation documents.”
China and ASEAN countries are promoting the construction of Belt and Road”, enhancing complementarity of respective development strategies and propelling cooperation with extra-regional economies. Cambodia has been the dialogue partner of SCO in 2015. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia said in an interview that as the window of Greater Mekong Subregion and ASEAN, Cambodia can play a role as a bridge connecting SCO and ASEAN.
Prak Sokhonn noted that SCO is one of the most important regional international organizations, which presents the growing potential for cooperation in the spheres of security and economy as well as other areas of cooperation including trade, investment, energy, tourism and anti-terrorism.
Referring to the economic cooperation between Cambodia and SCO, Prak Sokhonn said that SCO makes great contribute to global economy and offers Cambodia opportunities. He said, “we have seen Cambodian economy developed via cooperating with SCO. The SCO has identified specific areas of cooperation which mesh well with Cambodia's development policies and strategies.” He added that Cambodia supports the construction of Belt and Road, since it covers related countries of SCO and creates fair opportunities in the region.
This year is the 60th anniversary of the foundation of diplomatic ties between China and Cambodia. Prak Sokhonn pointed out, the friendship between China and Cambodia benefits Cambodia’s social and economic development and helps promote regional peace, stability and prosperity. China made tremendous contribution for Cambodia’s development, resulting in bilateral trade volume surging over 5 billion USD in 2017. China and Cambodia signed agreements under Belt and Road Initiatives in last May. Both sides kept close cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, special economic zone, culture and tourism, finance and eco-environment protection. He stressed that he expected the development of China-Cambodia relationship.
China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) hosted by China and ASEAN and CAEXPO Secretariat is the key platform strengthening the linkage among countries alongside Belt and Road. Cambodia will serve as the country of honor in this year’s CAEXPO and Prime Minister Hun Sen will attend the 15th CAEXPO with a delegation. In order to participate in the construction of Belt and Road, Cambodia will use pavilion D10 as a stand-alone pavilion with 145 booths to demonstrate its agriculture, infrastructure, SMEs, educational culture and tourism.
