Myanma’s First Vice President U Myint Swe said Myanmar will actively participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road as it thinks the initiative will greatly help boost the country’s electricity and infrastructure development.

He made the remark on September 12th during an interview with China Daily on the sidelines of the 15th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), which is being held in Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

According to U Myint Swe, Myanmar has already started the implementation of relevant bilateral agreements and his country "will continue cooperation with China on construction projects, such as oil and gas pipelines and deep water port".

This is the second time U Myint Swe led a delegation to the China-ASEAN Expo. Total 168 booths display food, jade and handicraft works from Myanmar.

"The CAEXPO provides a good platform for Myanmar commodities to enter the Chinese market and even the global market, which is very beneficial for Myanmar," he said.

The vice-president said he is deeply gratified by the fruitful results of the annual CAEXPO.

China has been ASEAN’s largest trading partner for eight consecutive years and its third-largest source of foreign investment.

Last year, bilateral trade volume between China and ASEAN was US$514.82 billion, accounting for 17.1 percent of ASEAN’s total foreign trade volume. "We need to maintain this momentum," said U Myint Swe.

He also noted the importance of China and ASEAN to enhance innovation and seize the development opportunities brought by the sharing economy, digital economy and the fourth industrial revolution "at a time when the world economy is confronted with unstable factors".

"We should actively explore new opportunities of cooperation in science and technology and digitalization for the enhancement of the ASEAN-China strategic partnership," he said.
