Malaysia has attracted 29.3 billion ringgits ($7.03 billion) in foreign investment in the first quarter of 2019, an increase of 73.4 percent over the same period last year, according to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority. In addition, the manufacturing sector occupies 20.2 billion of that total, up 127 percent from the same period last year.
China has been a major source of foreign investment in Malaysia’s manufacturing sector in recent years. Data provided by the MIDA shows that Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector reached 4.4 billion ringgits in the first quarter of this year, accounting for more than 20 percent of the foreign investment in Malaysia’s manufacturing sector, ranking second among countries in foreign investment in Malaysia.
