On July 31, 2019, the State Council Information Office (SCIO) held the Press Conference on the 16th CAEXPO and the 16th CABIS. This is the consecutive 16th year for the SCIO to hold such conference for these two events.
H.E.Li Chenggang, Assistant Minister of Commerce of China, H.E. Lu Pengqi, Vice Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and H.E. Yang Jinbai, Vice Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region respectively briefed on the China-ASEAN trade and economic cooperation, highlights and preparatory progress of the 16th CAEXPO and the 16th CABIS.
China-ASEAN trade and economic cooperation has been developing rapidly with fruitful outcomes. Assistant Commerce Minister Li Chenggang introduced those outcomes: First is the sustained growth of two-way trade; China has been ASEAN’s largest trading partner for straight 10 years, and ASEAN is China’s second largest trading partner. From January to June this year, the trade volume between China and ASEAN registered USD 291.85 billion, up by 4.2% year on year. Second is the fruitful China-ASEAN investment cooperation. By the end of 2018, the cumulative two way investment amounted to USD 205.71 billion. In 15 years, this figure grew by 22 times. ASEAN has become the priority region for Chinese companies to invest abroad. Third is remarkable achievements made in trade and economic cooperation along the Belt and Road. A series of cooperative consensus have been reached, important actions have been taken and practical results have been yielded in the joint construction of Belt and Road. Fourth is the acceleration of regional economic integration. The Protocol on upgrading the China-ASEAN FTA came into full effect; China has jointly built many trade and economic zones with ASEAN enterprises. Lancang-Mekong River Subregional Cooperation, Greater Mekong River Subregional Cooperation, China-Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor and Pan Beibu Gulf Economic Cooperation are well under way.
I. VVice Governor Yang Jinbai of Guangxi briefed on the important roles played by the CAEXPO and CABIS in China-ASEAN all-dimensional cooperation and the new highlights of the 16th CAEXPO. He said that the CAEXPO which has been successfully held for 15 years becomes a significant opening-up cooperation platform for China and ASEAN, playing an active role in the development of Belt and Road Initiative. Firstly, providing platforms for high-level dialogues to upgrade China-ASEAN friendly cooperation. The previous 15 sessions of CAEXPO and CABIS have totally attracted 79 Chinese and foreign leaders and over 3100 ministerial officials. These high-end friendly exchanges have provided diverse platforms for leaders and ministers to have dialogues, contributing to building an even closer China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future. Secondly, building professional cooperative platforms for achieving new outcomes in China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation. The previous 15 CAEXPOs have drawn 746,000 exhibitors and trade visitors, helping put in place a number of major projects, including Twin Parks in China and Malaysia, China-Indonesia Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, etc. It has practically facilitated the upgrading of China-ASEAN FTA and elevated the two-way opening-up and cooperation to a higher level. Thirdly, expanding the Nanning Channel and promoting China-ASEAN cooperation in various fields to a new stage. More than 200 conferences and forums on over 40 fields have been held under the framework of CAEXPO, establishing a series of cooperation mechanisms, helping build Guangxi as a gateway for financial opening-up towards ASEAN and put in place major projects like the China-ASEAN Information Harbor.
The upcoming 16th CAEXPO to be held on 20th September, 2019 will have five new features, as introduced by Vice Governor Yang Jinbai. New Vision: the 16th CAEXPO, with “Building Belt & Road Routes, Realizing Our Vision for A Community with Shared Future” as the theme, will be attended by leaders of China and the ASEAN countries. Exhibitions will highlight areas emphasized in the China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership Vision 2030, including trade, investment, production capacity cooperation, digital economy, science and technology, finance, e-commerce and tourism. New Hotspots: Closely following the current hot areas of cooperation, the 16th CAEXPO would promote the construction of New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and a gateway for financial opening-up towards the ASEAN, connect with the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and serve the building of the China-ASEAN information harbor. Exhibition areas will be expanded and exhibition content be optimized. A series of high-end forums will be held, and trade & projects matching and industrial connection services will be provided to advance the practical business cooperation. New opportunities: the 16th CAEXPO will hold promotion conferences of the 10 ASEAN countries and Chinese provinces and cities, Roundtable Meeting on Investment Cooperation, Promotion Conference on ASEAN Industrial Parks to create new business opportunities. 33 high-end forums/conferences under the CAEXPO framework will be held during the fair period, which will release authoritative information on multiple fields. The CAEXPO Global launch events will be organized for the first time, and the first CAEXPO Blue Book will be published, to help businesses obtain the latest information on economic and trade cooperation. New Influence: To mark the Year of China-ASEAN Media Exchanges, many Chinese and ASEAN TV dramas will be screened, and the China-ASEAN Forum on Radio, Television and New Media & TV Trade Fair will take place during the fair period for a win-win media cooperation. New Experience: the commercial complex of the Nanning International Convention & Exhibition Center comes into operation, providing more business-friendly services for the participants. The CAEXPO Agriculture Exhibition will be moved to a new venue - Guangxi Convention & Exhibition Center for Agriculture, with exhibition size as twice as that of the previous session. Line 3 of Nanning Metro has put into service, further strengthening the city’s transportation network and supporting facilities.
The 16th CAEXPO and the 16th CABIS, apart from enhancing existing well-known programs, begin to adopt a new model featuring holding annual events every September with programs organized throughout the whole year. The contents are further enriched and the value chains extended. As said by Vice Chairman Lu Pengqi of CCPIT, during this year’s CABIS, we will hold the Roundtable Dialogue between the state leader of Country of Honor and Chinese CEOs, China-ASEAN Business Leaders’ Forum, Innovation & Opening-up: Forum on the New Impetus of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the 2nd “Belt and Road” Youth Leaders Innovative Forum, TV Forum: Dialogue with Unicorn Enterprises, China-ASEAN Fruit Industry Development Forum and the China-ASEAN Night. A series of activities will also be organized in other time of the year, including the 2019 China-Japan-ROK Health Industry Forum, Development Forum on Integration with China’s Eastern Provinces, the 2nd “Belt and Road” New Economy Development Forum, China-ASEAN Artificial Intelligence Summit, 2019 Maritime Silkroad Fashion Culture Week, Seminar on China-ASEAN Commercial Legislation Cooperation, New Materials Development Forum, 2019 China (Guangxi) International Cooperation Summit Forum on Forest Health & Wellness Industry. Those programs will further promote regional economic cooperation and facilitate the comprehensive industrial connection between China and ASEAN.
