AS Myanmar agro-based products and foodstuffs will be showcased again at the upcoming 5th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), Myanmar will benefit from the abundant business opportunities brought by acceleration of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) construction.
Like the previous versions, the 5th China-ASEAN Expo, to be held in Nanning, China on October 22-25, 2008, will arrange a special section to showcase ASEAN commodities with unique flavours, including agro-based products, aquatic products and foodstuffs.
“Up to now, the number of booths for ASEAN countries is bigger than last year, increasing to 1130. Myanmar and five other ASEAN countries will set up their own exclusive pavilions of commodity trade,” Mr Qin Yizhaung, a senior official of the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) secretariat said.
Sound economic and trade outcomes have been achieved at the previous four CAEXPOs. A total of 7413 enterprises joined as exhibitors and 82,000 trade visitors/purchasers came from 65 countries and regions throughout the world.
The total trade volume recorded was US$4.94 billion and international cooperation projects topped $22.26 billion.
As for the agro-based products and foodstuffs sector, the trading amount doubled over the past four years, increasing from $65.022 million at the 1st CAEXPO to $145.509 million at the 4th, including a large contribution from Myanmar’s agro-based products and foodstuffs sector, Mr Qin Yizhaung said.
China, with a population of 1.3 billion, boasts a huge market and great demand for agro-based products and foodstuffs. Myanmar’s rice, pulse and beans, as well as aquatic products, have long been an indispensable supplement to China’s food market, and are already well received by Chinese consumers.
Bilateral trade between China and Myanmar has increased in recent years. In the first four months of this year alone, trade volume between the two countries reached $827 million, with Myanmar’s export volume to China standing at $198 million, growing 238.1 percent since last year.
