China and Brunei have kept a friendly long-term cooperative relationship with each other. H.E. Pehin Dato Yahya Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, said that now we are trying to build a marine economic passage way. For example, Guangxi and Brunei can build an expressway-like economic passage, so that Guangxi can better cooperate with Brunei. We have our advantages in Halal food and other consumption products, while Guangxi can help us broaden the market. Therefore, such an economic expressway will accelerate the close economic cooperation between Guangxi and Brunei.
Q: How do you appraise the role of CAEXPO in China-ASEAN Expo?
H.E. Pehin Dato Yahya Bakar: I think CAEXPO has provided a channel, for ASEAN countries to exhibit their products in China, and for China to import ASEAN products.
Q: Last October, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the conception of building the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. In your opinion, what role will this conception play in deepening trade between China and ASEAN? And how can the two parties participate in it?
H.E. Pehin Dato Yahya Bakar: I think 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, which was proposed last year at the 10th CAEXPO when I was also here, was a timely and important conception. Now we are trying to build a marine economic passage; just like what I have mentioned, Guangxi and Brunei is trying to build an expressway-like economic passage. A lot of practical work is needed to improve or realize the jointly building of 21st-Centural Maritime Silk Road. I'm happy to see that the proposal has been into progress and I believe there will be more positive development in the future.
Q: In jointly building the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, what areas should China-ASEAN strengthen cooperation?
H.E. Pehin Dato Yahya Bakar: I think the first challenge will be interconnectivity, which I refer here to the interconnectivity of transport, especially of ports. We know that some ASEAN countries have built relatively good infrastructure facilities, while some others do not have or have not made the best of it. Although we have met some other problems in the process, I believe we can accelerate the progress and enrich the conception if we tackle those problems one by one. As for the question: cooperation of what areas between Guangxi and Brunei in the past have been substantial? Generally speaking, cooperation between Guangxi and Brunei mainly lies in agriculture and food production, because Guangxi and Brunei are very close in geography, and three days will be enough for transportation to and from. Nanning is one of the closest major cities to Brunei. We share similar climate, and we are in the same time zone, so cooperation between us will be very effective.
Q: China is now negotiating with ASEAN on upgrading China-ASEAN FTA. In your opinion, how should the upgrading be carried on? And in what areas?
H.E. Pehin Dato Yahya Bakar: China-ASEAN cooperation refers to cooperation not only between China and ASEAN, but also cooperation between China and ASEAN countries. For example, we have signed a lot of cooperation agreements, which need specific work and activities to fulfill. Let's take the cooperation between Brunei and Guangxi as an example. We are cooperative closely to build a Brunei-Guangxi cooperation passage. Tomorrow, we will sign an agreement on carrying out closer economic cooperation between Brunei and Guangxi. I think we may cooperate at many levels, either China to ASEAN as a whole, or ASEAN to China. China and Brunei have had very friendly cooperative relationship for a long time, and we look forward to more and better cooperation on investment, agriculture, etc. in the future.
